Available for use only by those accompanied by stock (e.g. horses, mules, llamas), the Cayuse Horse Camp is a popular gathering place for trail riders heading into the mountains on several popular trails. It has spacious tent and RV sites with corrals assigned to individual campsites. A hand pump provides potable water.

This trail accesses the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and connects the Salmon La Sac Trailhead to the Pacific Crest Trail. Day hiking to the river makes a common destination in 3 miles one way. Equestrians enjoy the trail for both day rides and horse packing.
