Connecting Trails, Connecting Communities: Meet the Leafline Trails Coalition

The Mountains to Sound Greenway National Heritage Area encompasses a world-class regional trail system connecting Puget Sound urban areas and the Leafline Trails Network, through the Cascade Mountains to Central Washington, and beyond. The vision for its future is that a person walking, rolling, or biking could travel for recreation, commuting, or daily business on safe, enjoyable, non-motorized trails.

The Greenway Trust supports federal, state, and local funding requests to assist communities and government agencies with connecting trails and active transportation facilities throughout the Greenway NHA. We are happy to support these large, complex projects in order to reduce carbon emissions, improve the health of community members, and ensure a high quality of life for all. One initiative underway within the Greenway NHA that we are proud to support is the Leafline Trails Coalition—a collaborative effort to connect trails across the Central Puget Sound region and create a network that works for everyone, spanning city and county lines.

Leafline brings together trail managers and public agencies, nonprofits, community organizations, businesses, decision-makers, and trail users across King, Kitsap, Pierce, and Snohomish counties. Together, we are working toward a shared vision: an interconnected, intuitive, well-traveled, and treasured network of trails that provides equitable access to recreation, active transportation, and the outdoors.

Join the Conversation at the Leafline Regional Trails Summit

On October 23, 2026, trail advocates, community members, agency staff, elected officials, and others working on trails across the region will come together in Redmond for the Leafline Regional Trails Summit. Hosted by the Leafline Trails Coalition and City of Redmond, the one-day summit will focus on some of the opportunities and challenges involved in creating a connected regional trail network. Topics include trail funding, cross-jurisdiction collaboration, and strategies for serving a growing mix of trail users. The day will conclude with a conversation featuring elected officials from all four counties, followed by guided afternoon trail tours.
