Habitat Restoration at Sunset Beach (Breakfast Experience)
Get your (gloved) hands dirty at Lake Sammamish State Park and take part in habitat restoration that will support native plant growth and provide a healthy habitat for wildlife! Join Swan Phongwarinr, Volunteer Coordinator, for a hands-on volunteer experience where you’ll remove noxious weeds that outcompete for nutrients, or damage, the success of native plants in the area. This is an essential, and ongoing, part of any habitat restoration project and will contribute to the long-term stewardship of our recently completed in-stream restoration project in Issaquah Creek.
For safety, volunteers are required to wear:
- Long pants made of sturdy material
- Sturdy, close-toed shoes
- Gloves (provided)
In addition, we recommend that participants bring:
- Warm layers, especially during the fall, winter, and spring
- Rain gear
- Snacks for breaks
- Long sleeved shirt
- At least one full water bottle
- Small daypack for food, extra layers, etc…
We will assemble at the Meadow Shelter after the end of the Spring Breakfast Program and walk to Sunset Beach together.
Washington State Parks and the Mountains to Sound Greenway are partnering together on the multi-year restoration of Lake Sammamish State Park. The State Park provides important habitat for several species of salmon, many birds – including bald eagles, great blue herons, and red tailed hawks – and a wide variety of amphibians, insects and other wildlife, making this a great spot not only for recreating but for wildlife viewing opportunities as well. For more than 20 years, volunteers have worked in the park to reestablish native plant communities and to control non-native weeds from entering the park.
