Step Up for Public Lands

A crisis is unfolding in our beloved landscapes as the U.S. Forest Service faces the nationwide loss of 3,400 staff due to federal budget cuts ordered by President Donald Trump. This includes the Mountains to Sound Greenway National Heritage Area (Greenway NHA), where the U.S. Forest Service manages nearly 40 percent of public lands—more than any other agency. These land stewards do more than enforce regulations or put up signs—they do everything from maintaining trails and restoring habitats to rescuing hikers and mitigating the impact of wildfires. Federal public lands employees are the backbone of our national forests and parks. Their tireless work ensures that Washington’s trails, ecosystems, and outdoor spaces remain safe, accessible, and thriving for people and wildlife alike.

With increased visitation, climate challenges, and ongoing staffing cuts, the dedicated professionals who remain are being asked to do more with less. Show your support by learning what’s at stake, joining the Recreate Responsibly movement, and stepping up by registering to volunteer for an upcoming restoration or trail maintenance event.

The Growing Crisis in the Greenway NHA

The impacts of this crisis are already visible—closures, disrupted maintenance, and mounting strain on partner organizations like the Greenway Trust. Without urgent action, our public lands and recreation areas face long-term damage.
