Valentine’s Day Nursery Clean Up at Lake Sammamish State Park
Celebrate love for local habitats this Valentine’s Day by joining us for a family-friendly nursery event! Help us plant a future urban forest by caring for trees and shrubs at the Greenway Native Plant Nursery. Perfect for budding stewards and seasoned volunteers alike, this Valentine’s Day event will give family and friends a fun way to connect to our local ecosystem. We’ll have sweet treats, giveaways, and a special Valentine’s Day card station where volunteers can decorate pre-made cards with messages to spread the joy of giving back to nature. And to help you take a piece of the fun home with you, we will have a fun and festive polaroid photo booth to help you capture the moment on film!
Volunteers will help us get the nursery ready for the busy potting season by:
- Keeping plants healthy by hand weeding plant pots and nursery borders
- Giving back to the soil by sweeping up fallen leaves and transporting them to our compost pile using buckets and wheelbarrows
- Labeling and reorganizing plants into rows to make them easily accessible during tree planting season
For safety, volunteers are required to wear:
- Sturdy, close-toed shoes
- Gloves (provided)
Volunteers are recommended to wear:
- Long pants
In addition, we recommend that participants bring:
- Warm layers
- Rain gear
- Snacks for breaks
- At least one full water bottle
- Small daypack for food, extra layers, etc.
Please park at Tibbets Beach parking lot** in Lake Sammamish State Park. Google maps: https://goo.gl/maps/yiccno1nzz72
From I-90, take Exit 15. Follow signs for Lake Sammamish State Park, and go north on 17th Ave NW. Turn left onto NW Sammamish Rd. The main entrance to Lake Sammamish State Park will be on your right in about one-half mile. Enter the park and take your first left into the large parking lot.
**You will then walk to our nursery. Walk out of the parking lot back towards the entrance turning right, and then take a left towards the park office and into the park maintenance area. Walk straight towards the sheds and the ranger's house. The nursery is located next to the Maintenance Barn and Rangers’ Houses—look for Greenway event leaders and signs.
The Greenway Native Plant Nursery is home to nearly 20,000 native trees and shrubs. From the very start of their journey with the Greenway Trust, these trees are cared for by volunteers. At the nursery, volunteers pot these trees and shrubs, and after they have grown in our nursery for about two years, volunteers will plant these plants again, this time in their final homes in urban forests, parks, and open spaces throughout the Greenway landscape.
