Seasonal Trail Crew Supervisor

To complete these projects, the Greenway Trust will hire an experienced trail crew from May through September of 2020. Trail crews will work in variable weather, in remote locations, on back and front country trails, on difficult terrain, and under physically demanding conditions, and regularly on overnight “spikes” to backcountry projects.

As a member of the Greenway Trust Stewardship Program, you’ll have the opportunity to work with an enthusiastic team in an energetic, productive and fast-paced environment. Through extensive hands-on involvement in projects and agency partnerships, you will gain experience in natural resource and public land management.  There will be opportunities to build leadership skills, gain field experience and work collaboratively on trail maintenance and construction projects.

The right candidate will be experienced and skilled in trail construction and maintenance techniques, be able to work both independently and in a leadership role with crews, have a minimum of two seasons on a trail crew with leadership responsibilities, is a strong communicator, detail-oriented and quality-driven, and possesses a general interest in the Greenway Trust’s mission and goals.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Trail Crew Supervisor is a full-time, seasonal position with the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust. The Trail Crew Supervisor is responsible for the oversight of a seasonal trail crew consisting of one Crew Supervisor and three Trail Crew Members. The primary task for the crew will be the maintenance of existing trails and supporting construction of new trails within the Greenway landscape. The duties will include direct field supervision of a crew, mandatory safety check-ins and ensuring safety at work sites, operation of trail equipment and tools, leading backcountry spikes/hitches incorporating Leave No Trace principles and tracking and reporting of field results and trail crew timesheets.

The Greenway Trust mission is achieved through collaboration and partnership with the many members of the Greenway coalition – land managers, agency staff, nonprofit partners, volunteers. The trail crew represents the Greenway Trust in all interactions with our many partners and will be held accountable to the standards and expectations of Greenway Trust staff, land managers, and nonprofit partners.

The Trail Crew Supervisor should have a minimum of two seasons leading trail crews (trail maintenance and new construction), strong interpersonal skills and a strong work ethic, a professional approach to working with diverse individuals, volunteers, partner organizations and land managers and has general interest in the Greenway Trust’s mission and goals. The right candidate will be an experienced trail hand who is skilled in technical trail construction and maintenance techniques, is a strong communicator, detail-oriented, quality-driven, and is able to work with a positive attitude independently, in a leadership role with a trail crew, and with Greenway Trust project managers. The Trail Crew Supervisor should be able to hike long distances on a regular basis (10+ miles) while carrying and using common hand and power tools.

The Trail Crew will work closely with the Greenway Trust, multiple public land management agencies, contractors, other nonprofit staff, AmeriCorps members, and volunteers to accomplish project work. The Trail Crew Supervisor will work with Greenway Trust staff to ensure compliance with project requirements and standards, and will be responsible for monitoring safety, and reporting accomplishments and completing field reports. The Trail Crew Supervisor will also be responsible for managing interactions between the Trail Crew and members of the public and will represent the Greenway Trust in a professional manner.

  • Valid driver’s license with insurable driving record, and ability to pass criminal history background check
  • Proven ability to work and live outside in inclement weather for extended periods of time
  • Proven ability to teach and ensure proper maintenance and construction techniques and tool safety to a new crew
  • Working knowledge of proper and safe use of trail tools and equipment (such as chainsaws, grip hoists, toters, common hand tools, et cetera)
  • Ability to work independently and with a team and to plan and prioritize multiple tasks

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with new trail construction of a highly technical nature
  • Chainsaw/crosscut bucking certification, training, or experience
  • Experience constructing rock retaining walls
  • Experience with Leave-No-Trace principles
  • Experience with trail maintenance and construction in the Pacific Northwest
  • Experience driving four-wheel drive vehicles on unpaved roads

 

REPORTS TO

The Trail Crew Supervisor reports to the Middle Fork Valley Community Coordinator.

 

COMPENSATION

Salary is $20.00 per hour.

This seasonal position is not eligible for paid time off including holiday pay. There may be a possibility of unpaid days off due to inclement weather. Benefits include all legally required items, including paid sick time that accrues at the rate of one hour per 40 hours worked, and the option of participation in the Greenway Trust retirement plan.

 

LOCATION AND SCHEDULE

The trail crew will be based out of the Greenway Trust’s field base, located outside of Issaquah, WA.  Transportation from the satellite base to worksites throughout the Greenway will be provided. The trail crews will work a 10-hour workday, on an 8-days on/6 days off, Thursday-Thursday schedule, with the crew spike camped in front- and backcountry locations. The position is currently scheduled to run from late April through September 2020 with a possible extension thereafter.

The Greenway Trust Stewardship Program provides long-term stewardship of public and private land in the Mountains to Sound Greenway, which includes nearly 900,000 acres of public lands from Puget Sound to Central Washington. The Greenway Trust works closely with federal, state, county and city agencies, nonprofit partners, AmeriCorps conservation corps programs, and volunteers to complete ecological restoration (tree plantings, invasive plant survey and removal, riparian restoration, reforestation), forest road removal and road-to-trail conversion, trail maintenance and construction, and technical design, fundraising, implementation, and post-project maintenance.
