Seasonal Restoration Crew Assistant Lead

POSITION SUMMARY

The Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust is hiring a six-person Restoration Crew for the 2020 field season (late February into November). As a member of the Greenway Trust Stewardship Program, you will have the opportunity to work with a highly successful team in an energetic, productive and fast-paced environment. The Restoration Crew will be working variably as part of a six, four and two-person team to identify, survey, and control invasive plants, install native trees and shrubs, and maintain riparian and other ecological restoration projects in partnership with several public land management agencies throughout the Mountains to Sound Greenway.

This job announcement is for the Restoration Crew Assistant Lead position. This position is temporary/seasonal and full-time, for approximately 8 months, with the possibility for short-term extension and annual renewal. The position is highly physical and demanding in nature. Full days will be spent surveying for invasive weeds and applying herbicide while wearing a 30-pound backpack sprayer, running a brush cutter, or completing manual removal of weeds such as blackberry or ivy. The Restoration Crew will also support Greenway Trust volunteer events on a semi-regular basis (estimated 6-10 during the season) and will work regularly with Greenway Trust staff and occasionally with partner agency and nonprofit staff, sponsored AmeriCorps members, and volunteers.

The Restoration Crew Assistant Lead is responsible for assisting with the oversight of the seasonal crew consisting of one Lead, one Assistant Crew Lead and four Crew Members. The Assistant Lead will help with overseeing manual, chemical and mechanical invasive weed control; noxious weed surveys using GPS mobile applications; site maintenance and plant establishment; monitoring of project successes, and maintenance of existing project sites. The duties will include direct field supervision of the crew in the absence of the Crew Lead, direct supervision and responsibility for a subset of the crew, mandatory safety check-ins, tracking and reporting of field results and crew timesheets, strong daily communication with the Restoration Projects Manager, and the assistance in oversight of chemical and mechanical equipment use including troubleshooting and repairs.

The right candidate will be experienced and skilled in restoration techniques, be able to work both independently and in a leadership role with the crew, and have a minimum of one season on a restoration crew with some leadership responsibilities. They will have a demonstrated ability to be a strong communicator, detail-oriented and quality-driven, and have general interest in the Greenway Trust’s mission and goals.

  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License with an aquatic and/or right of way endorsement and/or the ability to obtain prior to date of employment.
  • At least one season of experience with pesticide application.
  • Wilderness First Aid certification or ability to obtain prior to date of employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead crews in proper restoration techniques.
  • Strong plant identification skills, with ability to learn Pacific Northwest native and invasive plants and educate others on proper identification.
  • Experience in proper use of tools and conducting routine maintenance of tools, including backpack sprayers, EZ Ject lances, brushcutters, and other restoration equipment.
  • Ability to work long days wearing a 30-pound backpack and applying herbicide to targeted invasive weeds.
  • Experience surveying vegetation and using GPS mobile applications.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Wilderness First Responder certification
  • Experience in Pacific Northwest native and non-native plant identification.
  • Experience with ArcGIS 10.7 or equivalent.
  • Ability to drive full-sized trucks on rough terrain, and experience pulling a trailer. Driving Greenway Trust vehicles requires an insurable driving record.
  • Relevant post-secondary education in a natural resource field.

REPORTS TO

The Restoration Crew Assistant Lead reports to the Restoration Projects Manager.

COMPENSATION

Compensation is $19.00 per hour.

This full-time seasonal position is not eligible for paid time off including holiday pay. There may be a possibility of unpaid days off due to inclement weather. Benefits include all legally required items, including paid sick time that accrues at the rate of one hour per 40 hours worked, and the option of participation in the Greenway Trust retirement plan.

LOCATION AND SCHEDULE

The Restoration Crew is based out of the Greenway Trust Field Office at Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah, WA and will work on surrounding public lands. The Restoration Crew works a 10-hour workday, on a Tuesday-Friday schedule, with occasional Saturday volunteer events. This position is currently scheduled to run from late-February into November 2020 with a possible extension thereafter. This position is contingent upon funding secured by the Greenway Trust.
