Are you looking to enhance your oral history collection and storytelling techniques? Join the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust for an engaging and practical virtual Oral History Workshop tailored to heritage professionals! 

Designed for heritage professionals interested in collecting and sharing oral histories in the digital age, this two-part workshop will provide hands-on technical training and insights from experienced practitioners using oral history to connect communities, activate archives, and tell compelling stories. Experts from Jack Straw Cultural Center, MOHAI- The Rainy Day History Podcast will provide hands-on technical training and approaches to collecting and archiving oral histories and Trans Rural Lives will share how they utilize events to bring intergenerational audiences together through oral histories and community creation.

This workshop is designed for museum professionals, community historians, and heritage organizations within the Mountains to Sound Greenway National Heritage Area who want to enhance their oral history practices. Whether you are starting your first oral history project or seeking innovative ways to modernize your existing archives, this workshop is for you. 
 

Workshop Agenda: 
Part 1: Technical Skill Sharing with Jack Straw Cultural Center 

  • Understanding the Basics: Learn the fundamentals of setting up an oral history project, including choosing budget-friendly equipment and techniques for collecting oral histories. 
  • Best Practices for Interviewing: Discover techniques for identifying compelling storylines and conducting engaging interviews. Practice your skills in breakout groups using mini scripts and peer feedback. 
  • Where to Host Audio: Explore where to digitally host your archives for your organization and the public to access. 

Part 2: Panel Discussion with Heritage Professionals 
Gain real-world insights from two panelists using oral history to engage diverse communities and bridge generational storytelling: 

  • Emily (Rainy Day History Podcast, MOHAI Youth Advisors): Learn how to engage youth in interpretive projects and balance academic rigor with creative storytelling. 
  • Griff (Trans Rural Lives): Discover strategies for creating in-person connections to oral archives, partnering with communities and activating spaces through collaborative events.
