What is a Trailhead Ambassador?

Trailhead Ambassadors are trained community volunteers who help visitors have safe, informed, and enjoyable experiences on trails across the region. As an Ambassador, you will:

Welcome and Guide Visitors: Provide friendly trailhead greetings and answer common questions.

Share Stewardship Practices: Offer Leave No Trace tips and site-specific safety information.

Support Land Managers: Help identify emerging trail issues and visitor concerns to improve conditions and experiences for all .

Become a Trailhead Ambassador in 4 Easy Steps

1. Submit the interest form (under 5 minutes). This helps us learn your availability, interests, and t-shirt size (every Trailhead Ambassador receives a program t-shirt to wear during shifts!)

2. Complete the online training (about 1 hour). Learn everything you’ll need to know: how the program works, what questions you might hear, and how to help visitors stay safe and have a great time.

3. Sign up for at least two shifts. To help the program run smoothly, we ask each volunteer to commit to a minimum of two shifts per season. Available dates and locations are posted below, on our main events calendar, and will be shared directly with volunteers. Pick the ones that work for you and sign up on a first-come, first-served basis.

4. Show up, have fun, and make a difference (shifts last 3 hours). We provide all essential supplies (tent, table, handouts, etc.) and pair you with a buddy. Just bring your enthusiasm and appropriate layers.

Program Requirements:

Trailhead Ambassadors must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Have reliable transportation to and from the trailhead

No special outdoor skills are required, just enthusiasm and a willingness to help!

5 Reasons to Become a Trailhead Ambassador

Becoming a Trailhead Ambassador means joining a community of people who care deeply about the outdoors. Whether you want to give back, meet new people, or simply enjoy the beauty of the Mountains to Sound Greenway National Heritage Area, this is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to make an impact.

  1. Make outdoor experiences better for everyone. Your friendly presence helps visitors choose the right trails, understand etiquette, and feel confident outside. Your guidance can turn a first visit into a safe and memorable adventure, and we all benefit from more informed trail users!

  2. Spend time outside with purpose. You’ll have a built-in reason to get out in some of the Greenway’s most beautiful destinations while making a real difference and chatting with fellow outdoor enthusiasts. And, by sharing stewardship information and gathering trail-use observations, you will directly support sustainable recreation and protect the places you love.
  3. Support land managers who need your help. Many agencies are stretched thin by extreme staffing and budget cuts. Your presence fills a critical gap and is deeply appreciated by both the public and agency staff who simply cannot be everywhere at once.

  4. Level up your skills, confidence, and outdoor knowledge. Our short online training gives you all the information you need; no prior experience required. You’ll gain transferrable skills through this experience, and have the opportunity to network with land managers and outdoor recreation organizations.

  5. Enjoy fun perks and recognition. Earn Ambassador gear such as a t-shirt, water bottle, and more!

“I loved the chance to learn more – about the trail system, about the environment, about my community, about a little bit of everything. It was a blast to meet new people and hear about how much everyone loves the trails.”

Program Partners

Formed by a partnership of land managers, nonprofits, local community members and businesses, the Trailhead Ambassador Program aims to bring together volunteers from all corners of the outdoor recreation world, evolving to build an inclusive community in the outdoors that works toward a shared goal of protecting public lands for future generations. No single entity can take this on alone; working in collaboration is essential to promote effectiveness and increase knowledge.
