School Year Programs

Bring learning to life with the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust! Both of our curricula include a pre-program assessment, classroom lesson, field study trip to Tiger Mountain or Lake Sammamish State Park, stewardship event, and reflective classroom lesson. Next Generation Stewards

Broadens students’ understanding of the connections among the living and nonliving parts of a Pacific Northwest forest. Along a 1.5-mile hike on Tiger Mountain, students record their observations and reflections in a science journal and, during a reflective lesson, take a pledge to become a ‘Next Generation Steward of the Greenway.’ This curriculum works well for 4th-5th grade classes.

Forest and Fins

Focuses on ecology and the life cycle of salmon. Students complete a mock stream survey in the classroom in preparation to do a real stream survey on the field study trip at Issaquah Creek. Students work in small groups to analyze the riparian zone, look for macroinvertebrates (stream bugs), test water quality, and evaluate the stream channel. This curriculum works well for 5th-12th grade classes.

Hands-On Habitat Stewardship

An important part of both our curricula is the stewardship event. Students build on the classroom lessons and field trip by taking action to improve habitat health for salmon and other wildlife. Depending on the season, they plant native trees and shrubs or remove blackberry and ivy.

Supplemental: Our Stewardship Activity Guide helps deepen your students’ understanding of environmental stewardship and how they can make positive change in their communities and beyond.
