The last 5 acres of riparian habitat along Issaquah Creek still covered by blackberry (right side of creek) when this photo was taken in 2020. Restoration is underway, including the planting of 950 trees at the Greenway’s Annual Tree Celebration in 2022.

Restoring Salmon Habitat in Issaquah Creek

Issaquah Creek is a vital salmon habitat that is an important wildlife corridor in the most populated watershed in the Mountain to Sound Greenway National Heritage Area. The lower reach of the stream hosts a multitude of fish species and runs through Lake Sammamish State Park. Historic logging and development led to the degradation of Issaquah Creek. The Greenway Trust led an in-stream restoration project that transformed the waterway back to a healthy meandering stream that provides refuge and rearing habitat for threatened Chinook salmon. As the creek regains complexity, volunteers and partners rebuild not just fish habitat but a living system for people, wildlife, and future generations.
