What to Bring

*For safety, volunteers are required to wear:

  • Long pants (we’ll be working with tools, so no shorts!)
  • Sturdy, close-toed shoes (absolutely no sandals)
  • Gloves

In addition, we recommend that participants bring:

  • Rain gear (raincoat, poncho, rain pants)
  • Warm layers
  • Water for the day (3 liters)
  • Small daypack for water, extra layers, etc.
  • NW Forest Pass (be sure to print a volunteer exemption from the link below)
Driving Directions

Volunteers will meet and park at the Middle Fork trailhead: https://goo.gl/maps/VGyjGdSvq5o

From Seattle, drive east on I-90 to exit 34 (Edgewick Road). Turn left (north) onto 468th Street and follow it to the junction with the Middle Fork Snoqualmie Road (Forest Road 56). Turn right and continue up the Middle Fork Snoqualmie Road for 11.8 miles to the Middle Fork trailhead parking area on the right. Look for Greenway signs and staff.

Additional Information
On National Public Lands Day, celebrate this beautiful area and the opening of the road by breaking ground on the future Garfield Ledges Trail. Volunteers will clear and grub to lay out new trail after hiking in approximately 1 mile. Note that the last 1/4 mile is very steep, so be prepared for strenuous physical activity.

When finished, this short trail will provide access to sweeping views of the Middle Fork Valley. REI will be hosting an optional NPLD family-friendly afterparty at the nearby Middle Fork Campground starting at 1:00 pm.

For over a decade, Mountains to Sound Greenway has worked to protect the scenic Middle Fork Valley of the Snoqualmie River. The Middle Fork Snoqualmie River Valley is a treasure for anyone living in or visiting the greater Seattle area. A person seeking a day of adventure could leave downtown Seattle and, in less than an hour’s time, reach the gateway to pristine Cascades wilderness in the Middle Fork Valley. From there, that person could set out on any of dozens of trails leading to mountain peaks, hidden lakes, or old-growth forests. This National Public Lands Day, give back to your local trails and join a community of stewards at Cheers for Volunteers (hosted by REI).
