SUMMARY:Teanaway Geology Hike to Cheese Rock
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, Central Washington University professor Karl Lillquist is leading another Geology Hike up to Cheese Rock! During the hike\, we’ll make several stops to learn about the geology of the area from Lillquist\, who is a physical geographer and has been a faculty member for CWU since 1995. His current research looks at environmental change in the deserts and mountains of the western United States.   \nMillions of years ago\, the 50\,000 acres that make up the Teanaway Community Forest were part of a jungle. Now the landscape of the Teanaway tells a unique geological history of the times between tropics\, ice lakes and today. It also makes up an important watershed area for the Yakima Basin.  \nPark at the West Fork turnaround and check in by 10AM for a round of introductions and a brief intro to the Teanaway Community Forest before your hike. Lillquist will lead the group across the river and the new trail bridge over Carlson Creek; then\, you’ll ascend about 280 feet up a trail and exposed sandstone slope to Cheese Rock. After reaching Cheese Rock\, the group will head along the ridge to a forest road that will take them back down the hill. This hike is short (2.5 miles round trip)\, but it does involve some rapid elevation gain\, so be prepared! The loop takes about two hours round trip\, so bring water and snacks.     \nRegistration is free\, but limited to 15 people\, and those of all ages—so long as they feel comfortable hiking up a steep hill—are encouraged to join us. You will need a Discover Pass for parking.  \nBathrooms: There are two outhouse toilets at the West Fork turnaround.  \nREGISTER

DESCRIPTION:Even after nesting is over\, the Teanaway Community Forest is full of birds! Come spot some with our guide\, Deb Essman. Whether you’re a beginner or a veteran birder\, there’s a place for you in the Teanaway. Deb Essman is an avid amateur naturalist\, who has lived in Kittitas County for the last 33 years\, and she’s been a member of the Teanaway Advisory Committee since its conception in 2013. For over 30 years\, Deb has taught wildlife classes at Ellensburg School District’s 5th grade camp\, and for over 15 years she has been a Hunter Education instructor for WDFW.  \nJoin us at the West Fork turnaround for an hour and a half of birding. Bring your binoculars and shoes suitable for walking through the forest.   \nRegistration is free\, but limited to 15 people\, and those of all ages are encouraged to join us. DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn the basics of what makes a healthy\, fire-resilient forest! Meet Jason Emsley\, DNR\, at the West Fork turnaround in the Teanaway Community Forest\, checking in with your vaccine card before 10AM\, when the walk begins.  \nJason will talk participants through the elements of forest health as you walk through the forest\, pointing out examples of past projects and practices and explaining the impact they have. Jason has been a Forester and land manager with the WA State Department of Natural Resources for 15+ years. He is responsible for forest operations in the Teanaway Community Forest and is an expert in wildfire mitigation and forest management. His personal interests include ethnobotany\, forest ecology\, traditional living skills\, and foraging.  \nThe walk will take about an hour and a half at an easy pace. Registration is free\, but limited to 15 people\, and those of all ages are encouraged to join us. Proof of vaccination is required for participation. SUMMARY:Teanaway Tracks
DESCRIPTION:Following the February 17th livestream “How to Read the (Animal) Signs\,” Deb Essman of Kittitas County Field and Stream will lead a tracking walk through the Teanaway itself.  Join us at the West Fork turnaround (Discover Pass required) to tromp out through the snow in search of animal sign. Snowshoes are advised and can be rented from Ride Roslyn\, Basecamp Outfitters\, Mountain High\, or CWU’s Outdoor Pursuits and Rentals.  \nDress for the weather. Recreate Responsibly recommends three layers: a base\, warm middle\, and waterproof outer layer\, along with a hat\, gloves\, and waterproof shoes. We recommend that you also bring water\, and a tool to measure tracks such as a small ruler\, or an object you know the length of (like a pocketknife or your phone). If you have binoculars\, bring those too!  \nOnce you are checked in at the West Fork turnaround\, Deb Essman will lead the group on a 1.5-mile walk through the Community Forest and talk participants through the basics of tracking and identifying the signs they come across.  \nRegistration is free\, but limited to 20 people\, and those of all ages are encouraged to join us.  Proof of vaccination is required for participation. \nWhat to bring: Winter layers\, waterproof/resistant shoes\, water\, and a method of measurement. Snowshoes\, camera\, and binoculars advised. Proof of vaccination required.  \nBathrooms: DNR has a permanent no flush toilet.  \nParking: West Fork turnaround at the end of W Fork Teanaway Road. Park on the left\, Discover Pass required.  \nREGISTER  \n
