SUMMARY:ONLINE: Gardening with the Seasons: Fall
DESCRIPTION:Autumn is a dynamic season in the garden. Many plants are heading into dormancy\, while others are in a period of active growth. Doing the right gardening tasks now can set the stage for next year’s garden: adding new plants for seasonal interest or making changes to address problems observed over the past season. Some of the best things to do – or to avoid – at this time of year may seem counter-intuitive to some gardeners. This session will cover what to plant in fall\, lawn care\, how to prepare the garden for winter\, and how to maximize seasonal interest and appearance. \nRegister online\, or by phone (206-685-8033) \nAbout this series:\nPlants and gardens don’t live by the written calendar\, but by the seasonal cycles and cues of changes in daylight\, temperature\, and moisture.  When gardeners become acquainted with the seasonal rhythms and life cycles in the garden\, and learn to work in sync with nature\, caring for the garden becomes more of a process and less of a battle with potential garden enemies. This series will help beginning and seasoned gardeners learn how to capitalize on optimal timing and sustainable practices to have a great garden all year long. \nPresenter:\nChristina Pfeiffer\, Horticultural Consultant and Instructor\, ISA Certified Arborist \nContact:\n206-685-8033\, urbhort@uw.edu

SUMMARY:Crows: The Avian Einsteins
DESCRIPTION:With their ability to hover in place\, fly upside-down or backwards\, cross seas without stopping\, hummingbirds seem immune to the ordinary laws of physics. Their jewel-tone feathers flash in the sun brighter than rubies or emeralds. Their wings flap faster than the eye can see. Their courtship flights defy gravity. These tiny dynamos of the avian world both fascinate and flummox us. Come find out more about one of the fiercest birds in the animal kingdom\, as master birder Connie Sidles introduces you to the wonders of hummingbirds. \nCost: $22 \nRegister Online or by phone (206-685-8033) \nConstance Sidles is a master birder and long-time member of the Seattle Audubon Society where she has been on the Conservation Committee and Chair of the Publications Committee.  She has written four books about nature focusing on her favorite “backyard” Montlake Fill\, otherwise known as the Union Bay Natural Area at the Center for Urban Horticulture. Her most recent book\, Forty-Six Views of Montlake Fill includes poems and Sumi paintings about how to find joy in the connections we make with nature and with each other. \n \n\n\n\n\nLocation\nUW Botanic Gardens\, Center for Urban Horticulture\, Douglas Classroom\, 3501 NE 41st St\nSeattle\, WA 98105\n\n\nCampus room\nDouglas Classroom\n\n\nPresenter\nConstance Sidles\, master birder\, author\, long time member of Seattle Audubon\n\n\nContact Information\nurbhort@uw.edu; 206-685-8033
