SUMMARY:Understanding the Roots of Racism: Transportation
DESCRIPTION:To better understand the history of racial injustice in policies and how it affects communities of color today\, United Way of Central Indiana is presenting a new four-part virtual learning series\, “Understanding the Roots of Racism in Food\, Housing\, Transportation and Health.” \nThese discussions will feature community experts in the fields of health\, housing\, food insecurity\, and transportation – all focus areas within United Way’s Basic Needs strategy. Because racial disparities persist and result in disproportionate impacts for people of color\, the goal of the series is to educate on inequalities and injustices in policy and action that create and perpetuate barriers to services\, resources\, and opportunities for Black Americans. \n\n\n\n\nEach registrant will be emailed a personalized link to join the discussion 48 hours prior to the event. \nTopic: Transportation \nThe struggle for people of color to access public transportation has a long history – from Frederick Douglass entering a train car reserved for white passengers in 1841 to the 20th century bus boycotts in the South which lead to landmark civil rights legislation. Transportation affects where we live\, work\, play and go to school\, and it serves as a key issue in addressing poverty\, unemployment\, health care\, and education. Join an important discussion about transportation and why it remains a civil rights issue in many communities.

SUMMARY:Getting out the Vote: Native Women’s Perspectives on Building Civic Engagement
DESCRIPTION:This year many will celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote with the 19th Amendment. Passed by Congress in August of 1920\, this amendment ended nearly 100 years of protest by guaranteeing women the right to vote. However\, it did not grant all women the right to vote. Women of color\, and specifically Native American women\, were excluded from the protections of the 19th Amendment. Barriers to this right continue even to this day. \nJoin this panel of Native American women for a discussion about voting rights and voter suppression from the viewpoint of the Native American community. This group of incredible women will share their experiences as Indigenous leaders and provide resources to help address barriers to voting in 2020 and beyond. This webinar series is part of an initiative to raise awareness of the 19th Amendment’s centennial and to “highlight stories of women who continue to shape the world.” \nFacebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/653367858938352 \nPanelists:\n– Lynnette Grey Bull\, Northern Arapaho\, US House candidate\, WY At-Large and Founder & Director Not Our Native Daughters\n– Phefelia Nez\, Navajo Nation\, First Lady\n– Andi Clifford\, Northern Arapaho\, Wyoming State Representative\n– Raven Pinto\, Navajo Nation\, B.A. Political Science\, Colorado State University\n– Savannah Romero (moderator)\, Eastern Shoshone\, Partnerships & Programs Manager at IllumiNative

SUMMARY:All About Cisterns (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Rains are coming…learn about how cisterns help stop polluted runoff! \nRainWise\, a City of Seattle and King County partnership\, offers rebates for rain gardens and cisterns on private property. These installations capture water that falls on roofs and keeps it out of sewer pipes during big rain storms. Cisterns are also a great source for summer water! \nNearly 2\,000 property owners have installed RainWise rain gardens and cisterns and are helping to keep our waterways clean. Rain gardens require specific property conditions to work. When a property is too steep\, too small\, or has insufficient drainage for a rain garden\, cisterns can be a great solution. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn about cisterns\, large above-ground containers used to collect roof water. You’ll also get to hear about their benefits in Seattle\, specifically how they help reduce combined sewer overflows and how they can be used for summer landscape irrigation. You will:\n• Listen to a short presentation on cisterns and the RainWise program\, along with resources for those not eligible for RainWise\,\n• Hear about a RainWise homeowner and their cisterns\, with a short Q&A\,\n• Have a chance to ask questions to cistern experts from RainWise. \nIf you would like to check your eligibility for RainWise\, please visit 700milliongallons.org/rainwise/eligibility-map/.

SUMMARY:Are You Bird Ready for Winter?
DESCRIPTION:Winter is a testing time for birds\, as they struggle to keep warm\, dry\, and fed. The challenge is especially difficult for youngest birds\, the ones that hatched earlier this spring. You can make a big difference in their lives. Join master birder and nature author Connie Sidles as she explains how to winterize your backyard and garden for birds. She will also give you some tips on backyard bird feeding\, water features\, and bird-safe windows. Winter will soon be upon us. Now is the time to give a helping hand to our winter residents. \nRegister Online or by phone (206-685-8033) \nThis online class will be delivered using Zoom. New to Zoom or need more information? Get Started Here. \nConstance Sidles is a master birder and long-time member of the Seattle Audubon Society where she has been on the Conservation Committee and Chair of the Publications Committee.  She has written four books about nature focusing on her favorite “backyard” Montlake Fill\, otherwise known as the Union Bay Natural Area at the Center for Urban Horticulture. Her most recent book\, Forty-Six Views of Montlake Fill includes poems and Sumi paintings about how to find joy in the connections we make with nature and with each other.

SUMMARY:The World of Carnivorous Plants (WA Native Plant Society)
DESCRIPTION:Olympic Peninsula Chapter: The World of Carnivorous Plants by Fred Weinmann\nRegister to attend for this Zoom webinar:  https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_KqHhEJnNS_-sH5qR6xcUFg \nAfter registering\, you will receive your zoom log in information for the day of the event.  You will also receive a reminder\, one hour before the event\, with log in information\, via email. \nPlants are amazing! This program will explore the multiple nutritional strategies of plants. We typically think of plants\, particularly green plants\, as synthesizing their own nutritional requirements via photosynthesis. For typical green plants this concept is true with respect to their source of organic energy; however\, it is only part of the story of the nutrients needed by all plants for survival. For many other species a completely different approach\, or combination of approaches\, has evolved to meeting their nutritional requirements. These approaches range from fully parasitic plants\, to facultative parasites to hemiparasites. In addition\, and the principal focus of this presentation\, are those plants which function as carnivores. Carnivory among plant species has evolved in multiple plant groups and includes numerous methods of prey capture. Both the variety of carnivorous species and their multiple shapes\, sizes and capture methods will be discussed. \nFred Weinmann is a wetland ecologist retired from EPA and from teaching botany and wetland classes at the University of Washington. In pursuit of his botanical interests he joined the Washington Native Plants Society in 1976\, the year of the Society’s founding. Since then he has been a frequent leader of botanizing field trips across the state. He is past chair of the Central Puget Sound Chapter\, the State Board of Directors and the Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Society.
