SUMMARY:Online Class: Nesting and Nourishment: A Travel Through Washington’s Interdependent Birds and Trees with Brendan McGarry
DESCRIPTION:Most of us have undoubtedly raised binoculars to follow birds through a nearby canopy\, but how often do we consider the deep relationships and reliance many species of birds have on native trees? In many cases birds and trees are inextricably linked: conifer seed crops dictating finch populations and aspen groves as apartment blocks for cavity nesting species. Join in on this jaunt across the state and consider our many iconic tree species and the birds that live with\, on\, and in them. \nTaught by Brendan McGarry \nThis is a two-part class. The second session will occur on April 26. \nREGISTER here. \n$30+ sliding scale fee; pay what you can. Current members of our local Seattle Audubon chapter receive a 20% discount on online classes as a benefit of annual membership. Please use code SASMEMBER at checkout. \nPlease note: Links to participate in each class are sent in the confirmation email you receive after registering (be sure to check your junk and/or clutter boxes) \nPhoto: Robert Martin\, Seattle Audubon Photography Awards

SUMMARY:Nature and Health Spring Talk: Dr. Jennifer D. Roberts (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer D. Roberts is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology\, School of Public Health at the University of Maryland College Park (UMD). Dr. Roberts is also the Founder and Director of the Public Health Outcomes and Effects of the Built Environment (PHOEBE) Laboratory as well as the Co-Founder and Co-Director of NatureRx@UMD\, an initiative that emphasizes the natural environmental benefits interspersed throughout and around the UMD campus. Her scholarship focuses on the impact of built\, social\, and natural environments\, including the institutional and structural inequities of these environments\, on the public health outcomes of marginalized communities. More specifically\, much of her research has explored the dynamic relationship between environmental\, social\, and cultural determinants of physical activity and using empirical evidence of this relationship to infer complex health outcome patterns and disparities among adults and children. Dr. Roberts is a member of the newly formed Nature and Health Alliance. \nRegister for this Zoom-based talk at the website link below

SUMMARY:Understanding the Roots of Racism: Transportation
DESCRIPTION:To better understand the history of racial injustice in policies and how it affects communities of color today\, United Way of Central Indiana is presenting a new four-part virtual learning series\, “Understanding the Roots of Racism in Food\, Housing\, Transportation and Health.” \nThese discussions will feature community experts in the fields of health\, housing\, food insecurity\, and transportation – all focus areas within United Way’s Basic Needs strategy. Because racial disparities persist and result in disproportionate impacts for people of color\, the goal of the series is to educate on inequalities and injustices in policy and action that create and perpetuate barriers to services\, resources\, and opportunities for Black Americans. \n\n\n\n\nEach registrant will be emailed a personalized link to join the discussion 48 hours prior to the event. \nTopic: Transportation \nThe struggle for people of color to access public transportation has a long history – from Frederick Douglass entering a train car reserved for white passengers in 1841 to the 20th century bus boycotts in the South which lead to landmark civil rights legislation. Transportation affects where we live\, work\, play and go to school\, and it serves as a key issue in addressing poverty\, unemployment\, health care\, and education. Join an important discussion about transportation and why it remains a civil rights issue in many communities.

SUMMARY:Getting out the Vote: Native Women’s Perspectives on Building Civic Engagement
DESCRIPTION:This year many will celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote with the 19th Amendment. Passed by Congress in August of 1920\, this amendment ended nearly 100 years of protest by guaranteeing women the right to vote. However\, it did not grant all women the right to vote. Women of color\, and specifically Native American women\, were excluded from the protections of the 19th Amendment. Barriers to this right continue even to this day. \nJoin this panel of Native American women for a discussion about voting rights and voter suppression from the viewpoint of the Native American community. This group of incredible women will share their experiences as Indigenous leaders and provide resources to help address barriers to voting in 2020 and beyond. This webinar series is part of an initiative to raise awareness of the 19th Amendment’s centennial and to “highlight stories of women who continue to shape the world.” \nFacebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/653367858938352 \nPanelists:\n– Lynnette Grey Bull\, Northern Arapaho\, US House candidate\, WY At-Large and Founder & Director Not Our Native Daughters\n– Phefelia Nez\, Navajo Nation\, First Lady\n– Andi Clifford\, Northern Arapaho\, Wyoming State Representative\n– Raven Pinto\, Navajo Nation\, B.A. Political Science\, Colorado State University\n– Savannah Romero (moderator)\, Eastern Shoshone\, Partnerships & Programs Manager at IllumiNative

SUMMARY:All About Cisterns (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Rains are coming…learn about how cisterns help stop polluted runoff! \nRainWise\, a City of Seattle and King County partnership\, offers rebates for rain gardens and cisterns on private property. These installations capture water that falls on roofs and keeps it out of sewer pipes during big rain storms. Cisterns are also a great source for summer water! \nNearly 2\,000 property owners have installed RainWise rain gardens and cisterns and are helping to keep our waterways clean. Rain gardens require specific property conditions to work. When a property is too steep\, too small\, or has insufficient drainage for a rain garden\, cisterns can be a great solution. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn about cisterns\, large above-ground containers used to collect roof water. You’ll also get to hear about their benefits in Seattle\, specifically how they help reduce combined sewer overflows and how they can be used for summer landscape irrigation. You will:\n• Listen to a short presentation on cisterns and the RainWise program\, along with resources for those not eligible for RainWise\,\n• Hear about a RainWise homeowner and their cisterns\, with a short Q&A\,\n• Have a chance to ask questions to cistern experts from RainWise. \nIf you would like to check your eligibility for RainWise\, please visit 700milliongallons.org/rainwise/eligibility-map/.

SUMMARY:IslandWood: Teacher Professional Development: Community Science Course
DESCRIPTION:Our professional development opportunities are designed to support powerful learning experiences that connect to students’ lives. In this time of increasing awareness and activism\, we are joining with teachers to address the vast racial\, economic\, and environmental disparities in our communities and classrooms. \nDuring this course\, you will explore with IslandWood staff and other teachers how local phenomena and investigations in YOUR community can be centered in a Next Generation Science Standards storyline to connect to the interests and identities of your students and support understanding of the impact of climate change. We will use an example phenomenal storyline to explore possibilities during our two large group sessions in November. Two small group follow up sessions will provide the opportunity to develop and discuss with other teachers what a hyperlocal storyline approach could look like for your students. \nBy the end of this course participants will… \n\nUnderstand how local phenomena interact with the Next Generation Science Standards\, climate change\, ecosystems and people in a community.\nExperience how local phenomena and field investigations can build scientific understanding.\nUnderstand how centering local phenomena in curriculum increases learning equity and supports student engagement.\nWork together to develop and implement ideas for incorporating local phenomena and their communities as a part of NGSS curriculum.\nDevelop tools to increase students’ understanding of climate change and capacity to think about climate change solutions.\n\nThe course includes: An asynchronous session to complete before November 10th followed by an online session on Saturday\, November 14th from 10-2:30 (includes an hour break for lunch). You will then be collaborating with a smaller teacher team to develop\, adapt and discuss implementation of activities in two subsequent online meetings. \nCost: The $20 registration fee will be refunded to teachers who attend the first whole group session. \n
