SUMMARY:Eastside Audubon Program Night
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for an evening of enjoyment. Virtually all paleontologists agree that birds evolved from dinosaurs\, and most even go so far as to claim that birds are\, in fact\, living dinosaurs. Come learn about the remarkable similarities between birds and the creatures they evolved from. We guarantee that you will not only be surprised as to how dinosaur-like birds are\, but also how very bird-like dinosaurs were. You will never think about T. rex in the same way again!

SUMMARY:Birds & Native Plants in Western Washington
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder why native birds need native plants? Join us on November 15 for an informative presentation by UW Bothell Herbarium’s Collections Manager\, Sarah Verlinde\, and lead volunteer\, Ashley Shattuck\, as they explore the relationship between birds and plants and discuss some of the most popular and important plants needed by our local birds. The presentation will also cover invasive plants that currently threaten bird habitats\, and how you can make an impact in your garden and community natural areas. \nSarah and Ashley have been building the UW Bothell Herbarium’s collection of native plants for the last 3 years. As a storage facility that catalogues and holds dried plant specimens\, the Herbarium provides hands-on student programs while archiving plant specimens from King and Snohomish Counties for their historical and cultural significance.

SUMMARY:Paul Bannick presents Owl: A Year in the Lives of North American Owls
DESCRIPTION:Award winning photographer Paul Bannick will present his new program at the Eastside Audubon Society featuring video\, sound\, stories from the field\, and several dozen new images from his brand new book: Owl: A Year in the Lives of North American Owls. Paul uses intimate yet dramatic images to follow owls through the course of one year and in their distinct habitats. His talk will focus on the four seasons of territory\, as each stage in an owl’s life is chronicled through rare images: courtship\, mating\, and nesting in spring; fledging and feeding of young in summer; dispersal and gaining independence in fall; and\, finally\, winter migrations and competition for food. The presentation will show how owls use the unique resources available to them in each habitat to face those challenges. \nOwl is a stunning follow-up to Bannick’s bestselling title\, The Owl and the Woodpecker\, giving bird lovers yet another gorgeous photographic tribute\, engaging natural history\, and a compelling call to preserve the habitats that sustain these most iconic of birds. Nearly ten years of working in some of the most remote parts of the continent\, at the darkest hours of the day\, tracking owls as they move through their lives has rewarded Paul with striking images that he will share with us on October 25.
