SUMMARY:Are You Bird Ready for Winter?
DESCRIPTION:Winter is a testing time for birds\, as they struggle to keep warm\, dry\, and fed. The challenge is especially difficult for youngest birds\, the ones that hatched earlier this spring. You can make a big difference in their lives. Join master birder and nature author Connie Sidles as she explains how to winterize your backyard and garden for birds. She will also give you some tips on backyard bird feeding\, water features\, and bird-safe windows. Winter will soon be upon us. Now is the time to give a helping hand to our winter residents. \nRegister Online or by phone (206-685-8033) \nThis online class will be delivered using Zoom. New to Zoom or need more information? Get Started Here. \nConstance Sidles is a master birder and long-time member of the Seattle Audubon Society where she has been on the Conservation Committee and Chair of the Publications Committee.  She has written four books about nature focusing on her favorite “backyard” Montlake Fill\, otherwise known as the Union Bay Natural Area at the Center for Urban Horticulture. Her most recent book\, Forty-Six Views of Montlake Fill includes poems and Sumi paintings about how to find joy in the connections we make with nature and with each other.

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Gardening with the Seasons: Summer
DESCRIPTION:Summer brings an abundance of growth and blooms…and sometimes garden problems. Managing weeds and irrigation are prime targets for attention at this time of year. Time-saving tips for proactive garden care will help gardeners have more time to enjoy their gardens. Key topics will include care of seasonal containers\, watering practices\, potential weed and pest problems to be aware of\, and specialized pruning practices for the season. \nCost: $28\nRegister online\, or by phone (206-685-8033) \nAbout this series:\nPlants and gardens don’t live by the written calendar\, but by the seasonal cycles and cues of changes in daylight\, temperature\, and moisture.  When gardeners become acquainted with the seasonal rhythms and life cycles in the garden\, and learn to work in sync with nature\, caring for the garden becomes more of a process and less of a battle with potential garden enemies. This series will help beginning and seasoned gardeners learn how to capitalize on optimal timing and sustainable practices to have a great garden all year long. \n \n\n\n\n\nLocation\nOnline\n\n\nCampus room\nDouglas Classroom\n\n\nPresenter\nChristina Pfeiffer\, Horticultural Consultant and Instructor\, ISA Certified Arborist\n\n\nContact Information\n206-685-8033\, urbhort@uw.edu

SUMMARY:Crows: The Avian Einsteins
DESCRIPTION:With their ability to hover in place\, fly upside-down or backwards\, cross seas without stopping\, hummingbirds seem immune to the ordinary laws of physics. Their jewel-tone feathers flash in the sun brighter than rubies or emeralds. Their wings flap faster than the eye can see. Their courtship flights defy gravity. These tiny dynamos of the avian world both fascinate and flummox us. Come find out more about one of the fiercest birds in the animal kingdom\, as master birder Connie Sidles introduces you to the wonders of hummingbirds. \nCost: $22 \nRegister Online or by phone (206-685-8033) \nConstance Sidles is a master birder and long-time member of the Seattle Audubon Society where she has been on the Conservation Committee and Chair of the Publications Committee.  She has written four books about nature focusing on her favorite “backyard” Montlake Fill\, otherwise known as the Union Bay Natural Area at the Center for Urban Horticulture. SUMMARY:ONLINE: 2020 Ecological Restoration Symposium
DESCRIPTION:This event has been rescheduled from March 26\, 2020 and is now being offered as an online webinar. In-person registrants will be contacted via email about refunds and online registration options. \nEcological restoration practitioners are growing increasingly aware of the importance of acknowledging multiple trophic levels and employing community ecology theories into project goals and design. In this symposium\, we seek to examine the influence of invertebrates such as pollinators\, beneficial insects\, prey and pests\, and to identify challenges and solutions in considering invertebrates in restorative efforts in terrestrial and aquatic systems. \nThis symposium is co-sponsored by the University of Washington Botanic Gardens and the Northwest Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration to provide continuing education for restoration ecology practitioners. \nWhy should you attend? Come to ask questions\, to hear your colleagues’ tales of their successes and challenges\, and to learn about cutting-edge approaches being used to improve restoration project success. \nCost:\nIn-Person: $95\nRemote attendance: $80\nDiscounts available for remote group registrations\, full time students\, and corps members. \nRegister online or by phone (206-685-8033)

SUMMARY:Virtual Forest Bathing Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join UW Botanic Gardens and Cascadia Forest Therapy for a unique virtual forest bathing opportunity. Forest bathing (or shinrin-yoku) has been popular in Japan for decades and is gaining momentum in the US. The practice encourages you to walk in the forest (or the space available to you) at a slower pace and take in the atmosphere around you. Multiple scientific studies have shown that it lowers stress and blood pressure levels\, while increasing immune system functioning\, making you more resilient to diseases and illness. \nThese walks are slow-paced and can take place in any space. All participants will be joining the call from their individual space (whether in nature or home) where they can practice safe social distancing. If going outdoors\, we encourage you to stay close to home and follow social distancing guidelines. During the walk the guide\, in partnership with the forest\, will offer an evolving series of invitations crafted to help participants slow down and open their senses. The opening of one’s senses encourages mindfulness\, which readies the heart and mind to be fully present in the natural world. Come discover the medicine of being in the forest. \nAt the end of the session we will conduct a tea ceremony. Since we cannot share tea in person\, you are encouraged to bring your own tea or beverage of choice to sip during the ceremony. \nCost: $25\nRegister Online or call (206-685-8033) \nHere are some helpful guidelines about virtual forest bathing walks from the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides: \nGetting Started\nOur virtual forest bathing walks will be using Zoom.\n‍Click here to Download the Zoom App for your phone.\nYou can join using a phone or internet connection. \nComfort\nFor those able to be outside\, we suggest that you dress appropriate for the weather and maybe a little warmer than usual since you will be moving slowly and possibly sitting on the ground. Having a small mat\, bag\, or cushion to sit on can also be nice.\nFor those of you inside\, may we suggest sitting near a plant(s) and/or a window with a view outside\, if possible. Guides will be sharing their view\, so you can “experience” the outdoors through your screen as well. \nGroup Etiquette\nPlease practice Group Etiquette by keeping your phone on mute unless invited to share. In the bottom left corner of your screen\, there is a little microphone. Click on it to mute or unmute yourself.\nIn order to ensure the best experience for everyone\, please commit to fully participating while you are on the group call and refrain from answering texts or emails. \n\n\n\n\nLocation\nONLINE\n\n\nPresenter\nMichael Stein-Ross\, Cascadia Forest Therapy\n\n\nContact Information\nurbhort@uw.edu; 206-685-8033

SUMMARY:ONLINE: Creating a Child-Friendly Garden
DESCRIPTION:In his book\, Last Child in the Woods\, Richard Louv writes that “stress reduction\, greater physical health\, a deeper sense of spirit\, more creativity\, a sense of play…are the rewards that await a family when it invites more nature into their children’s’ lives.” If you are intrigued by the idea of making inviting and nurturing places for children within your own garden\, this class will inspire and inform you!  You‘ll learn ways to create unique places for nature exploration and play that fire your child’s imagination and “grow up” along with them\, and fun ways to incorporate easy food gardening as part of your regular family activities. All attendees receive “top ten” lists of child-friendly plants to include\, a list of plants to avoid\, and other helpful resources. Attendees should bring some photos of their existing yard for customized advice. \nTaught by Emily Bishton \nCost: $28\nRegister online or by phone (206-685-8033)
