SUMMARY:Expanding our Interests in Native Plants through Photography
DESCRIPTION:Native plant enthusiast and wildflower photographer Donovan Tracy will examine how photography expands our appreciation and knowledge of native plants.  This program is presented in a series of 2 online programs.  Participants should plan on attending both sessions. \nThe emphasis throughout will be on how we as native plant enthusiasts\, botanizers and amateur photographers can better view and photograph plants in their native habitats. \nTuesday\, November 10th and Monday\, November 16th.  7pm-9pm.  \nThis program is free\, but registration is required:  https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_wtfhJ3BqQCCmj8N_L0grkQ \nYou will receive a zoom log in after registering\, that is unique to you. A reminder log in email will be sent 1 hour before each session to your email address. \nPart 1 and Part 2 are intended for the same audience.  Upon registration\, participants will receive log in information for the session\, and will receive reminders 1 hour before each program\, with the log in links. These sessions will be recorded and provided to participants of the program only. Please read the description for date and time for each session – Part 1 and Part 2: wnps.org/events/909. \nAbout Donovan Tracy: Donovan is a volunteer with the UW Herbarium\, and co-author of the wildflower guide\, Alpine Flowers of Mount Rainier\, with David Giblin\, the herbarium’s collection manager. He developed the website Flowers of Rainier (www.flowersofrainier.com) which features over 230 species and 12 wildflower hikes.

SUMMARY:The World of Carnivorous Plants (WA Native Plant Society)
DESCRIPTION:Olympic Peninsula Chapter: The World of Carnivorous Plants by Fred Weinmann\nRegister to attend for this Zoom webinar:  https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_KqHhEJnNS_-sH5qR6xcUFg \nAfter registering\, you will receive your zoom log in information for the day of the event.  You will also receive a reminder\, one hour before the event\, with log in information\, via email. \nPlants are amazing! This program will explore the multiple nutritional strategies of plants. We typically think of plants\, particularly green plants\, as synthesizing their own nutritional requirements via photosynthesis. For typical green plants this concept is true with respect to their source of organic energy; however\, it is only part of the story of the nutrients needed by all plants for survival. For many other species a completely different approach\, or combination of approaches\, has evolved to meeting their nutritional requirements. These approaches range from fully parasitic plants\, to facultative parasites to hemiparasites. In addition\, and the principal focus of this presentation\, are those plants which function as carnivores. Carnivory among plant species has evolved in multiple plant groups and includes numerous methods of prey capture. Both the variety of carnivorous species and their multiple shapes\, sizes and capture methods will be discussed. \nFred Weinmann is a wetland ecologist retired from EPA and from teaching botany and wetland classes at the University of Washington. In pursuit of his botanical interests he joined the Washington Native Plants Society in 1976\, the year of the Society’s founding. Since then he has been a frequent leader of botanizing field trips across the state. He is past chair of the Central Puget Sound Chapter\, the State Board of Directors and the Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Society.

SUMMARY:In Restoration the Preservation of the World (WA Native Plant Society)
DESCRIPTION:For the past 15 years the Freeman-Leopold family has joined thousands of other volunteers and dozens of organizations in working to restore the Tarboo Creek watershed on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Through triumphs and setbacks\, the effort has passed a family legacy\, originated by Susan Leopold Freeman’s grandfather Aldo Leopold\, to a 4th generation. \nPlease register to attend this webinar presentation:  https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Gp3Jz7k3QvydAs4C4PgaDw\nThis session will be recorded. \nScott Freeman grew up in Wisconsin and received a B.A. in Biology from Carleton College. After working in environmental education and international conservation\, he completed a PhD at the University of Washington on the evolution of blackbirds. He had a Sloan Fellowship to support a post-doctoral fellowship at Princeton University\, then returned to the University of Washington as Director of Public Programs at the Burke Museum. He then wrote four editions of the textbooks Evolutionary Analysis and Biological Science and received a UW distinguished teaching award for his work in large-enrollment introductory biology classes. He is currently Lecturer Emeritus in Biology at UW and works as an ecological forester\, habitat restorationist\, and writer. He recently published his first book for a general audience\, called Saving Tarboo Creek.
