SUMMARY:ONLINE: Gardening with the Seasons: Fall
DESCRIPTION:Autumn is a dynamic season in the garden. Many plants are heading into dormancy\, while others are in a period of active growth. Doing the right gardening tasks now can set the stage for next year’s garden: adding new plants for seasonal interest or making changes to address problems observed over the past season. Some of the best things to do – or to avoid – at this time of year may seem counter-intuitive to some gardeners. This session will cover what to plant in fall\, lawn care\, how to prepare the garden for winter\, and how to maximize seasonal interest and appearance. \nRegister online\, or by phone (206-685-8033) \nAbout this series:\nPlants and gardens don’t live by the written calendar\, but by the seasonal cycles and cues of changes in daylight\, temperature\, and moisture.  When gardeners become acquainted with the seasonal rhythms and life cycles in the garden\, and learn to work in sync with nature\, caring for the garden becomes more of a process and less of a battle with potential garden enemies. This series will help beginning and seasoned gardeners learn how to capitalize on optimal timing and sustainable practices to have a great garden all year long. \nPresenter:\nChristina Pfeiffer\, Horticultural Consultant and Instructor\, ISA Certified Arborist \nContact:\n206-685-8033\, urbhort@uw.edu

SUMMARY:2019 Ecological Restoration Symposium
DESCRIPTION:  \nUniversity of Washington Botanic Gardens 2019 Symposium: Restoration Beyond the Reference System \nTheoretical\, practical\, and ethical dimensions in managing for ecosystem function rather than species assemblages in a complex and forever changing landscape \nCost\nIn-Person: $95\nFull-time student / Corps member\, in-person: $50\nRemote Attendance*: $80 (discounts available for groups attending remotely) \nRestoration practitioners are challenged by projects in which recovery toward a reference model community is not attainable. In these cases\, it becomes advantageous to restore ecosystem function\, rather than a historical suite of species. In this symposium\, we will look at restoring ecosystems beyond reference conditions − from the theoretical background\, practical application\, and ethical dimensions that practitioners need to understand in order to restore ecological communities and functions across a complex and ever-changing landscape. \nThis symposium is co-sponsored by the University of Washington Botanic Gardens and the Northwest Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration and is part of a collaboration to provide continuing education for restoration ecology practitioners. Come to ask questions\, to hear your colleagues’ stories of their successes and challenges\, and to learn about cutting-edge approaches being used to improve restoration project success. \n*NEW in 2019: REMOTE ATTENDANCE: We are excited to offer remote attendance\, helping make this symposium more accessible to a broader audience throughout our region. However\, in order to cover the associated costs\, remote viewing availability is contingent on a minimum number of registrations. Remote registrants will be notified when the minimum has been met and availability is confirmed. If the minimum is not met\, we will provide a full refund of your registration fee or transfer it towards an in-person registration. \nLunch and reception included with registration.
