SUMMARY:Wilderness First Aid Kit (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:You have a basic first aid kit for day trips\, but is it complete? What about back country trips where you are more remote from help? A surgeon Mountaineer discusses her wilderness first aid kit\, complete with all the items you’ll need to treat the most frequently encountered emergencies in the wilderness. \nSheila Lally\, DO is a practicing general surgeon. She has a long history in the outdoors guiding mountaineering expeditions in remote locations in the Rockies\, climbing Mt. McKinley\, bicycle touring\, and sea kayaking.  She has assembled a practical\, compact first aid kit for wilderness travel that she will share with us.  Please join us for a one hour talk over Zoom where she will show each item in her kit and describe its use. \nI will send out Zoom joining details about 24 hours before the start time\, along with her list. You may wish to print this out to help follow along. Check your email junk folder if you haven’t received a link to join the virtual meeting by the indicated time; it is not uncommon for large BCC’d messages to be directed to spam. \nRegistration cut-off is 24 hrs before the event.\n \nIn the wake of course and activity cancellations\, support of The Mountaineers is more critical now than ever before. If you can\, please consider donating $10 to The Mountaineers to support programs such as these. \nContact: Charlie Michel\nEmail: michelbike99@gmail.com\nPhone: 360-710-0616

SUMMARY:Behind The Shot: Road Trip through the Lens with Heidi Walker
DESCRIPTION:Buckle up your seat belts for a photographic road trip through Washington’s State Parks with photographer and writer Heidi Walker. A native of Washington State\, Heidi grew up exploring the state’s public spaces. Recently she has turned her camera lens to capture the variety of landscapes and adventures contained in the parks for her book “The Photographer’s Guide to Washington State Parks”. She began her project “because these special places I grew up in deserve to be photographic destinations in their own right.” \nFor this presentation\, Road Trip through the Lens\, Heidi has created themed road trips through several parks exploring Washington’s history\, flora\, fauna\, geology\, culinary specialties\, and just pretty scenery. Along the way she’ll give you hints and tips to help guide you on you own photographic adventure. \nHeidi has been surrounded by art her entire life\, with a photographer father and a painter mother. They spent every vacation traveling to National Parks in the US & Canada to capture their beauty. She grew up with the understanding that the outdoors and art go together naturally. Heidi has since shared this understanding through classes offered at The Mountaineers and in private workshops. \nHeidi’s website can me found here. \nMore details and tickets

SUMMARY:Trail Magic: The Grandma Gatewood Story - Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:TRAIL MAGIC: THE GRANDMA GATEWOOD STORY is the Emmy-nominated documentary about the first woman to solo thru-hike the 2\,050-mile Appalachian Trail in 1955 at the age of 67 after raising 11 children. \nThis first screening of this film in western Washington is co-sponsored by the Foothills branch of the Mountaineers and the City of Bellevue\, Department of Parks & Community Services. \nThe film follows the twists and turns of Emma Gatewood’s historic walk from Mt Oglethorpe to Mt. Katahdin in 1955\, much of the story in Emma’s own words. The story is augmented by key interviews with family\, historians\, and experts commenting about the amazing events that led up to that journey and her ability to overcome nearly insurmountable obstacles\, including years of spousal abuse\, along the way. TRAIL MAGIC: THE GRANDMA GATEWOOD STORY was nominated for an Emmy Award from the Regional National Association of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) in the “Best Documentary\, Historical” category in April\, 2017. \nIn 1955\, at the age of 67\, Gatewood told her children (who were by then adults) that she was going for a walk. They did not ask where or for how long\, as they knew she was resilient and would take care of herself. About 5 years earlier\, Gatewood read an article in National Geographic about the AT and thought “it would be a nice lark\,” though in retrospect considering the difficulty she added “It wasn’t.” \nThe magazine gave her the impression of easy walks and clean cabins at the end of each day’s walk. Thus she took little in the way of outdoor gear. She wore Keds shoes and carried an army blanket\, a raincoat\, and a plastic shower curtain in a homemade denim bag slung over one shoulder. In a sense she was truly a visionary of the ultra-light hiking movement. \nShe would later say of the AT: “For some fool reason\, they always lead you right up over the biggest rock to the top of the biggest mountain they can find.” \nShe hiked the AT again in 1960\, and then again at age 75 in 1963\, making her the first person to hike the trail three times (though her final hike was completed in sections). She was also credited with being the oldest female thru-hiker by the Appalachian Trail Conference. \nIn addition\, she walked 2\,000 miles (3\,200 km) of the Oregon Trail from Independence\, Missouri to Portland\, Oregon averaging 22 miles (35 km) a day. She traveled to every state of the continental United States. \nIn 2018 the New York Times published a belated obituary for her as part of its Overlooked series about “remarkable people whose deaths went unreported in The Times”. \nThe screening of TRAIL MAGIC will be preceeded by a film about the history of the Appalachian Trail. \n\nDoors at 6:30\nFilm begins at 7:00 P.M.\nGeneral admission: $13\nMountaineers members and City of Bellevue residents: $10\nVisit Eventbrite for tickets

SUMMARY:BeWild Speaker Series: Heather Anderson\, What Life on the Nation's Longest Trails Has Taught Me
DESCRIPTION:The Mountaineers present: Heather Anderson \nBy the age of 25\, Washington’s Heather “Anish” Anderson had hiked the “Triple Crown” of hiking: the Appalachian Trail\, Pacific Crest Trail\, and Continental Divide Trail. After that\, with her wild oats sewn\, she attempted to settle down. It didn’t take. After a few years\, she left her job\, her marriage\, and a dissatisfied life and walked back into the mountains. \nIn November 2018\, Heather became the only woman to have completed a calendar year “Triple Crown of Backpacking\,” completing the Appalachian\, Pacific Crest\, and Continental Divide National Scenic Trails in a single calendar year. In the process\, she set a female Fastest Known Time (FKT) for the route— hiking it in 251 days\, 20 hours\, 10 minutes and is the only female “Triple Triple Crowner” having completed the entire route three times. \nWhat drives her passion for life on far-flung trails? It is something she asked herself in the days\, weeks\, and months she walked alone in wild places\, facing her fears\, loneliness\, and physical challenges. \nJoin us to hear Heather tell stories from her new memoir\, Thirst: 2600 Miles to Home\, published by Mountaineers Books\, and discover what she learned about herself and life on the trail. \n\nDoors – 6:00pm\nShow Starts – 7:00pm\nGeneral Admission – $12\, visit Eventbrite for tickets\nMountaineers Members receive a $2 discount with an online ticket purchase (see Eventbrite details for discount details/instructions)\n\nBeWild Speaker Series\nThe Mountaineers are proud to present the BeWild Speaker Series we’re putting passion and adventure on the stage. Come to any one of these talks – or all six – and we guarantee you’ll leave inspired to seek adventure\, connect with nature and work to protect wild places.

We will listen for birds\, splash in a creek\, play in the sand\, look for bugs\,…and enjoy being surrounded by nature! \nThe last Tuesday of each month we host an activity here at The Mountaineers Seattle Program Center. We have a different educational theme each month\, such as leaves falling\, snow\, and colors in nature. Join us for activities\, crafts\, and stories relating to each theme to make learning fun. \nAlthough times might fluctuate\, especially on Meet Ups\, expect all Mini Mountaineers events to start at 10am and run for one hour. \nDates and Locations: \nJanuary 8: Meet Up – Carkeek Park (Please meet at the Carkeek Park Playground 10am.) \nJanuary 22: Activity – Let it Snow (Please meet in the lobby of the Seattle Program Center at 10am.) \nFebruary 12: Meet Up – Seward Park (Please meet at 10am at the Seward Park Environmental & Audubon Center. ) \nFebruary 26: Activity – Colors in Nature (Please meet in the lobby of the Seattle Program Center at 10am.) \nMarch 12: Meet Up – Cowen and Ravenna Park (Please meet at 10am at the Ravenna Park Picnic Shelter.) \nMarch 26: Activity – Rocks Rock (Please meet in the lobby of the Seattle Program Center at 10am.)
