SUMMARY:Program Night: Tracking Tree Kangaroos in Papau New Guinea
DESCRIPTION:Doug Bonham grew up in Washington DC where he began birding in 1966 when there was only one published bird field guide. He later moved to Montana to earn degrees in wildlife biology and electronics at the University of Montana. Doug was also the founding president of the Audubon chapter in Missoula. To this day\, Doug alternates jobs every few years between biology and electronics; he is currently working on motherboards for Surface Pro laptops at Microsoft. He has designed custom GPS tracking devices for wildlife research for a range of species including eagles\, owls\, deer\, elk\, sheep and the subject for the presentation – endangered tree kangaroos in Papua New Guinea. \nFor our November program night\, Doug will describe the unforgettable three weeks he spent at a research camp at 10\,000 feet in a remote corner of Papua New Guinea. The cloud forest at those mountain tops is home to the endangered Matchie’s tree kangaroo. With help from local trackers and hunters they were able to successfully capture eight wild tree kangaroos. The group attached Doug’s custom tracking devices that acquired the first ever GPS tracks plus activity and altitude data from wild Matchie’s tree kangaroos. \nDoug’s trip to Papua New Guinea was funded by National Geographic and the United Nations. The project has arranged an agreement with local villagers whereby if they respect a no-hunting zone for endangered tree kangaroos\, in exchange they get three times normal market price for their coffee. Their coffee is then sold as premium ‘Tree Kangaroo Conservation Coffee’ at high end shops including Cafe Vita in Seattle. \nPlease join us this November to learn about the ongoing conservation project on tree kangaroos in Papua New Guinea! \nThis event is free and open to the public. Program Nights takes place on the fourth Thursday of every month from 7-9 pm unless otherwise indicated. Doors open at 6 pm.

DESCRIPTION:November can be an excellent time for raptors and waterfowl in the Samish/Skagit Flats. We will get an early start to explore the area. SUMMARY:Union Bay Natural Area Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk through the trails of Yesler Swamp and the Wahkiakum Loop Trail to experience one of the best waterfowl wintering areas. Ducks\, geese\, grebes\, shorebirds\, and some resident raptors are all possible. This will be a leisurely two-mile walk along boardwalks and gravel paths\, and will be over by early afternoon. Bring binoculars\, a snack\, water\, and dress for weather. Scope is always helpful. Restroom facilities are limited\, and we will stop at University Village before birding. SUMMARY:Grizzly Bear Recovery in Washington State
DESCRIPTION:Apex predators\, such as grizzly bears\, are critical to maintaining a healthy ecosystem. In Washington state\, this species is at a high risk of disappearing from the North Cascades\, where only five grizzlies may remain. Restoring a viable grizzly population would contribute to the biodiversity in the ecosystem to the benefit of human beings and other species. \nThis September program night\, we’re excited to explore the topic of grizzly recovery with Graham Taylor\, Northwest Field Manager with the National Parks Conservation Association (NCPA)\, in Washington state and across the western US. Graham works with the Friends of the North Cascades Grizzly Coalition\, a group dedicated to restoring grizzly bears to North Cascades National Park and the surrounding ecosystem. He will feature Time for the Grizzly\, a popular short film by Chris Morgan that examines how grizzly bear recovery is proceeding in Montana. Graham will discuss the ongoing process here in Washington\, and take questions about how we at Eastside Audubon can get involved. \nThe US Fish and Wildlife Service and National Park Service are currently taking public comment on their plan to bring bears to the North Cascades. DESCRIPTION:Songbirds\, waterfowl\, raptors\, shorebirds\, amphibians\, turtles\, beavers\, and other small mammals make Juanita Bay Park their home. Interpretive tours of this wildlife habitat are conducted by Eastside Audubon’s volunteer Park Rangers on the first Sunday of each month. \nTours start in the parking lot at 1 p.m.\, rain or shine\, and take about one hour. Bring binoculars if you have them. Free. Children aged 6 and above\, accompanied by an adult\, are welcome. \nNo pre-registration required. SUMMARY:Three Forks Park Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Birds are quieter in summer following their breeding time\, but many are still around. We’ll bird the two locations of the Three Forks Park\, while enjoying a relaxed walk on mostly level ground on an even trail. We will also walk part of the Snoqualmie Valley Trail. We’ll begin early to walk in the cooler part of the day and should return by noon or earlier. DESCRIPTION:This field trip is part of Eastside Audubon’s Birdathon fundraiser. A donation of $25 or more is encouraged to support the conservation\, education\, and advocacy work of our chapter. \nKittitas County offers some spectacular birding where the Ponderosa Pine forest meets the Subalpine Fir zone on the drier eastern slope of the Cascade Range\, creating a habitat for birds not seen west of the mountains. We’ll hit the Railroad Ponds in Cle Elum\, the Swauk Prairie\, Teanaway area\, the Ellensburg area\, lower Robinson Canyon\, and some other spots as time allows. We hope to find Pygmy Nuthatch\, Mountain Chickadee\, Vesper Sparrow\, Mountain and Western Bluebirds\, American Kestrel\, Swainson’s Hawk\, Bullock’s Oriole\, Lazuli Bunting\, various woodpeckers\, and some warblers. \nWe will leave from the open parking lot of the Tibbetts Park & Ride in Issaquah at 6:00 a.m. and return by late afternoon. SUMMARY:Birding 101: Spring and Summer Birds
DESCRIPTION:Birding can be great fun but frustrating until you become familiar with the local birds and learn the skills that expert birders use. Eastside Audubon will kick-start your abilities by covering their techniques to separate and narrow identifications. Size and shape\, color patterns\, behavior\, habitat\, and sounds all play a key role in helping identify species. The focus will be on common birds likely to be found in Western Washington during the spring and early summer. \nSlides and field trips will allow you to practice these skills. We will spend time on bird songs\, too. We will cover the hardest birds early in the course so there will be lots of time for review. \n\nFlycatchers\, Woodpeckers\, Vireos\, Jays\, Swallows\, Chickadees\, Wrens\nThrushes\, Starlings\, Waxwings\, Finches\, Sparrows\, Warblers\, Blackbirds\nWaterbirds: Ducks\, Coots\, Grebes\, Ducks\, Geese\, Swans\, Cormorants\nGulls\, Terns\, Shorebirds\, Hawks\, Falcons\, Eagles\, Vultures\n\nThe goal is to help you learn 100 species that you might see in Western Washington during a trip to a local park\, wetland\, or natural area. \nThomas Bancroft will offer several walks at local parks. DESCRIPTION:Join Eastside Audubon Society for this informative class on mason bees with biologist Olivia Shangrow on Saturday\, February 16. \nBlue orchard mason bees are one of the earliest emerging native bees in the Pacific Northwest and are critical for the pollination of many of our spring blooming native plants and fruit trees. Solitary pollinators such as the mason bee are often overlooked but are extremely important to the health of our ecosystems. Olivia will share information on the lifecycle of these bees and their use in the agricultural industry\, as well as how easy it is to host these gentle bees in your backyard. Her program\, Rent Mason Bees provides everything you need to pollinate your backyard and boost local bee populations. \nOlivia Shangrow is a biology graduate from the University of Washington and is passionate about building awareness of the importance of native bee species to our environment and food systems. Along with running the Rent Mason Bees program\, she teaches local classes on bees and works for the nonprofit organization Orchard Bee Association.

Join us on November 15 for an informative presentation by UW Bothell Herbarium’s Collections Manager\, Sarah Verlinde\, and lead volunteer\, Ashley Shattuck\, as they explore the relationship between birds and plants and discuss some of the most popular and important plants needed by our local birds. The presentation will also cover invasive plants that currently threaten bird habitats\, and how you can make an impact in your garden and community natural areas. \nSarah and Ashley have been building the UW Bothell Herbarium’s collection of native plants for the last 3 years. As a storage facility that catalogues and holds dried plant specimens\, the Herbarium provides hands-on student programs while archiving plant specimens from King and Snohomish Counties for their historical and cultural significance.

SUMMARY:Bird Habitat Restoration at Marymoor Park
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow Eastside Audubon bird lovers as we restore bird habitat along the Bird Loop at Marymoor Park in Redmond. This month we will be following up with mulch for our new plants planted in November and December. \nWe will also take on the Scotch broom and blackberries coming up along the meadow edges and\, perhaps\, by the river gate. They are all easy to spot this time of the year\, and we won’t be bothering our meadow birds. \nAll volunteers will meet in Lot G of Marymoor Park. No prior experience in habitat restoration necessary. Gloves and tools will be provided\, but we ask that you wear sturdy shoes\, bring a water bottle\, and dress for the weather.

SUMMARY:First-time Birder Walk at Juanita Bay Park
DESCRIPTION:This field trip is for the novice birder\, someone with little or no birding experience. It includes a combination of instruction and field time. Trip leaders Lori and Antonio will first cover topics such as birding etiquette\, bird identification\, using field guides\, birding apps and binoculars. Then they will lead the group on a birding trip through the park. At the conclusion\, they will discuss choosing binoculars and Q&A. This trip is a good primer before heading out on your own or joining other Audubon field trips. Bring binoculars if you have them; loaners will be available if you don’t. Children 10+ are permitted if accompanied by a parent/guardian. The trip is free but limited to 8 people\, and pre-registration is required. DESCRIPTION:The Samish and Skagit Flats can be excellent for raptors (hawks\, eagles\, falcons) in late winter. We’ll explore looking for a variety of raptors\, waterfowl\, perhaps wintering shorebirds and passerines. January can bring any sort of weather\, so come prepared.
