SUMMARY:Chilkat Weaving—Present and Future (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Join this Burke Museum virtual event from home! \nRenowned weaver\, Lily Hope\, will present her latest in-progress Chilkat dancing blanket which uses both commercially and hand-dyed fibers. \nShe will discuss scarcity of materials\, Indigenous hunting rights\, and the continuity of this artform on the Northwest Coast. \nThis event is FREE and open to all. \nLily Hope. Tlingit. Raven. T’akdeintaan clan. \nLily is a distinguished artist and community leader born and raised on Lingit Aani. She is a Chilkat weaver in the teaching lineage of Jennie Thlunaut & Clarissa Rizal. Pre-shutdown\, Lily taught weaving internationally. She now teaches on Patreon\, holding bi-weekly space for weavers across the nation to continue studying Ravenstail and Chilkat techniques. \nHer finger-twined\, adapted formline\, ceremonial Chilkat dancing blankets take years to complete. They document inheritance; weavings recording history like a book woven in yarn; a lineage of weavers\, our current crisis\, and political issues. She’s also a paper collage artist\, bead-worker\, and Indigenous fashion designer. \nLily is an Enthuser and advocate for artists and the arts. Her conversations\, collaborations and ideas contribute lasting support and a rich artistic community for artists in Alaska and beyond.

White\, Director of Education at the Museum of Paleontology at the University of California\, Berkeley to share their stories in a conversation moderated by Dr. Alvin Logan\, Burke Museum Director of Education. \nGratitude\, healing and a special opportunity to support access to the Burke’s educational programs will be led by Polly Olsen (Yakama)\, Burke Museum Tribal Liaison. \nRegister: https://www.burkemuseum.org/clearing-paths-creating-access/register
