SUMMARY:WTA Work Party at Elk Ridge
DESCRIPTION:A volunteer opportunity with Washington Trails Association: Spend a day exploring this bucolic corner of King County\, where a collaborative effort to develop a comprehensive trail system within Taylor Mountain Forest is underway. We will be working on re-routing an existing portion of the Elk Ridge trail. \nAbout the Area\nThe extensive trail system at Taylor Mountain Forest is used by equestrians\, hikers\, and mountain bikers. This working forest is intended to demonstrate environmentally sound forest management\, protect and restore ecological systems and provide passive recreational opportunities. Taylor Mountain is dominated by mature red alder trees. Trail users will see recent efforts to convert some of the forests from red alder to conifers. \nWhat to Expect\nWe’ll have fun\, work hard and make a difference! No experience is necessary. \nProject Description\nWork will involve creating a re-route for an existing portion of trail. Brush removal and tread construction will be the primary goals of the day. \nHiking Information\nOur hike to the project site is expected to be 1-3 miles roundtrip over rolling terrain. \nSchedule\n8:30 AM: Be ready to sign in and meet the crew\, rain or shine\n8:35 AM: Gather for a safety briefing\, then hike to the project site\nMorning: Work at your own pace\, and take breaks throughout the day\n12:00 PM: Lunch on the trail\nAfternoon: Consider trying a new task before wrapping up the day’s work\n3:30 PM: Sign out after enjoying refreshments at the trailhead\nFor safety reasons\, arriving late or leaving early is not allowed. \nPlanning Information\nGet ready for a great day outside! \nWhat it Takes to Do This Work Party\nNo experience is necessary—just bring a great attitude for working with a team! WTA provides the training and tools you need\nExpect to be physically active at your own pace for up to 6 hours on uneven terrain\nRecommended for ages 10 and older; under 14 must be accompanied by an adult and a parental consent form must be signed for anyone under 18\nWhat to Wear\nBoots\nLong pants\nWork gloves\nLong-sleeved shirt recommended\nEye protection recommended (glasses\, sunglasses or safety glasses)\nA hard hat will be provided by WTA. For safety reasons\, shorts and sneakers are not allowed. \nWhat to Bring\nLunch and plenty of water\nRain jacket and pants\nExtra warm clothing in case of wet or cold weather\nA pack to carry your personal gear\nA sense of fun and adventure for learning new skills and meeting great people!
