SUMMARY:Native Plant Planting at Lake Sammamish State Park - Lakeside Parcel
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, Lake Sammamish State Park’s footprint increased by more than 5 acres\, thanks to a generous donation of land from Issaquah-based Lakeside Industries. This newly acquired property lies east of the Park and includes nearly 1\,200 linear feet along the eastern bank of Issaquah Creek. The addition of this property improves connectivity to the City of Issaquah and will tie into other Washington State Parks and Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust restoration efforts along the creek. Now\, nearly all the creek from E. Lake Sammamish Parkway to the lake is in public ownership. Another bonus is an existing trail through the parcel that will connect to Lake Sammamish State Park’s existing trail system. \nThis donated parcel originated from a grant application to the King County Flood Control District to acquire the parcel\, which Lakeside Industries was willing to sell for under market value. After meeting with Greenway Trust representatives and learning of the long history of restoration along Issaquah Creek\, Lakeside Industries decided to donate the parcel to Washington State Parks. This land donation means the restoration work intended for the property can get started much sooner than expected. We are excited to invite volunteers to be part of this new project and help restore this riparian buffer of Issaquah Creek. The first stage of restoration will be removed invasive species to prepare the area for native tree planting projects. Volunteers can expect to remove ‘old-growth’ blackberry\, and pull out some amazing rootballs to prevent the plant from re-sprouting\, all while enjoying a lovely day on the creek. \nThank you for volunteering with the Greenway Trust\, no experience is necessary\, and all training is provided. Please sign the online waiver\, link in agenda e-mail\, prior to your event. \nNew: We are now offering Discover Pass vouchers to volunteers who volunteer on State managed land.  With 24 hours of documented volunteer service you can send in your vouchers to Washington State Department of Natural Resources for a Discover Pass.
