Coal Creek Trail

Volunteers with NewTurnpikeA popular Bellevue-area hike, the 4-mile Coal Creek Trail follows Coal Creek as it winds from its headwaters on Cougar Mountain to the shores of Lake Washington.  Filled with moss-covered trees, ferns, and meandering streams, the deep river ravine illustrates how a healthy woodland ecosystem can exist in close proximity to the urban built environment.  The Coal Creek Trail was also part of the original Greenway March that highlighted the incredible historical, cultural and ecological resources available along the I-90 corridor.

Due to increased popularity, the City of Bellevue and Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust are joining forces to make significant renovations on the trail to accommodate increase use.  Projects will include bridge and step construction, significant tread re-engineering, and rock wall installation, among others.  Our goal is for the trail to be improved to a higher, more sustainable standard for current and future hikers.

"Truly the best time I have ever had while doing physical labor. It was just really great to get together with people I had never met before, and all of us pulling together for one purpose and just being a team. It was great. Will totally do it again for sure!! My first time and I'm hooked"  -Joy
