The Power of Two Slices of Bread: Sustainable Sandwiches Support Work of Mountains to Sound Greenway

Homegrown Sustainable Sandwich Shop Partners with the Greenway in Seasonal10 Campaign

Dec 15, 2011

Twenty years ago, a group of hikers, conservationists and passionate Washingtonians completed a now-famous hike from Snoqualmie Pass to Seattle. This watershed moment marked the birth of the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the character, the scenery and the local communities that make up the spectacular landscape between Seattle and Ellensburg.

In 2011 to celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Greenway Trust held it’s first-ever photo contest and touring photo exhibition. The exhibition features images of the Mountains to Sound Greenway taken by the people who live, work and play in the cities, towns and open spaces from Puget Sound east to Central Washington - featuring amateur photographers of all ages and abilities. The photographs were selected by Exhibition Curator, Seattle photographer Dave Schiefelbein, from the hundreds of entries submitted. The photos have been on tour in the Greenway since August. Their last stop this month is in Seattle at Homegrown Sustainable Sandwich Shops.

Equally dedicated to preserving the character of this region, in particular local agriculture, these innovative sandwich makers strive to push the envelope on what social responsibility means in business today. Homegrown’s Seasonal10 campaign was born from this philosophy- an initiative that partners Homegrown with a like-minded non-profit each season for a donation of 10% of the sales from their seasonal sandwich. This winter, in conjunction with hosting the Greenway’s groundbreaking photo exhibition, Homegrown will partner with the Greenway, offering a seasonal sandwich option, a tasty Butternut + Bacon Melt, to customers. Helping people feel good about what they eat is something Homegrown takes as seriously as supporting the efforts of like-minded non-profits like the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust.

Says Homegrown founder, Ben Friedman, “We're excited to partner with the Greenway Trust this winter and help spread the word about making conservation a sustainable business model.”

Erin MacCoy, Communications Manager for the Greenway Trust, adds, “Partnering with Homegrown helps bring into focus the importance of supporting local agriculture and business in the Mountains to Sound Greenway.”

A selection of photos from the exhibition, printed by Panda Lab in Seattle and framed by Annie's Art and Frame in Ballard, will be on display at Homegrown’s Queen Anne and Fremont locations from December 21st until March 2012.
