Greenway Heritage Study
Building a Framework for the Future of the Greenway

Heritage Study: After nearly 20 years of collaborative efforts to connect a green corridor of forests, farms, rivers, lakes and communities, the Greenway Community is looking at new strategies for sustaining the landscape. The Heritage Study, guided by active participation from an array of stakeholders, will inventory the multitude of Greenway assets, document their associated threats and needs, and devise a cooperative framework for efficiently managing them.
The goals of the Heritage Study are as follows:

a) Inspire the Greenway Community: Continue empowering the community to carry out the Greenway vision, which encompasses economic, social, and environmental goals.
b) Develop a Plan for Future Stewardship: Create a Cooperative Stewardship Framework, a stakeholder-generated plan for maintaining and enhancing the Greenway for the next 20 years.
c) Make the Greenway Official: Define the best way to make the Greenway official, such as a National Heritage Area, thereby formalizing the Greenway vision for future generations.
During the Study, more than 500 stakeholders will be involved in a collaborative engagement process that seeks to give direction to current and future generations for stewarding the Greenway for the long term.
Background: The Mountains to Sound Greenway encompasses over 1.4 million acres of connected natural lands and vibrant urban areas surrounding Interstate 90 between Puget Sound and Central Washington State. The Greenway conserves a shared heritage of historic towns, spectacular alpine wilderness, working farms and forests, extensive outdoor recreation and wildlife habitat throughout a region that includes the 15th largest metropolitan area in the country.
The Mountains to Sound Greenway is a national success story -- but considerable challenges to maintain and enhance this treasured landscape lie ahead. Through the Heritage Study, Greenway partners and stakeholders will devise ways to meet these challenges and ensure the future success of the Greenway.
