Mountains to Sound Greenway Youth Volunteer Program

The Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust leads and inspires action to conserve and enhance the landscape from Seattle across the Cascade Mountains to Central Washington, ensuring a long-term balance between people and natureYoung summer camp volunteer. The Greenway volunteer program engages more than 4,000 volunteers each year; over half are youth.

Young people are the future caretakers of this spectacular landscape. To enable more youth to participate, the Greenway Trust is seeking to raise $75,000 from private donations. With your support, the Greenway Trust will engage over 2,500 young people in hands-on trail and ecological restoration projects in 2010.

Greenway coordinators work to develop and lead weekend and mid-week events as well as week-long Greenway Summer Camps that combine outdoor education with ecological restoration and trail improvement projects.

Young people can participate as individuals or come as a group from local schools, faith groups, sports clubs, non-profit organizations or social networks. Youth leadership and apprenticeship programs are also available.

A Commitment to the Greenway

Your support is needed to expand the opportunities for young people from around the region to learn about and experience native plants and animals, ecological restoration and trail maintenance.

The Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust will use these funds to recruit and lead youth volunteers, produce outreach materials, design educational activities and purchase project supplies.

Young nursery volunteersThe Mountains to Sound Greenway youth volunteer program is unique because it empowers young people with knowledge and skills to make positive changes in their local communities.  We have found that time spent educating youth about local heritage, watersheds, native plants, and land conservation exposes them to new career options and helps form a lasting connection with nature.

Your gift will enable young people to build an affinity with the outdoors, learn about the benefits of forests and healthy streams, participate in conserving these resources, and enjoy the recreational benefits of the natural world.

The continuation and expansion of this youth volunteer program will be pivotal in inspiring young people to become long-term stewards of the Greenway.
