My Favorite Way to Spend a Saturday

I had been volunteering off and on with the Greenway for a year when I met a volunteer named Amy Spens. She really inspired me to get more involved with the Greenway. At the time, I was a sophomore in high school and she was a senior. She had just completed an internship with the Mountains to Sound Greenway over the summer helping out at the Greenway Trust’s office. She is so bright and bubbly and cheerful, I couldn’t help but want to become more involved. I already loved coming out and volunteering but meeting her really encouraged me to dive in and work.

I started volunteering almost every month after that.

There is nothing more fulfilling than being a Volunteer Assistant with the Greenway. I love working with everyone at the Mountains to Sound Greenway, meeting the AmeriCorps volunteers and learning plant names. I’ve always wanted to be able to name the plants I see along the side of hiking trails and on walks, and now I can identify an ever-growing number of plants! During trail work, sometimes I stay on a project, like a turnpike, all the way through completion so that I can learn about how the structure is made from beginning to end. There is a lot of hands-on learning which is a lot of fun.

The Volunteer Assistant Program is a great way to give back. I am passionate about the environment and making a difference. I love having the opportunity to help other people experience the wonders of nature and the power of volunteering as well as inspire them the way Amy inspired me. I want to encourage people to be as excited about the Greenway as I am so they will want to come back again and again.

Truth be told, volunteering with the Greenway Trust is my favorite way to spend a Saturday!
