Ecological Restoration

Lake Samm planting 2008An ambitious environmental restoration program brings volunteers and conservation corps crews to remove invasive plants such as English ivy, holly and Himalayan blackberry, plant native trees and shrubs and improve natural areas for wildlife and salmon habitat.

Major projects are underway at Lake Sammamish State Park, Issaquah Creek,  Mercer Island parks, Riverfront Park in North Bend, Three Forks Natural Area and along the banks of the Raging and Snoqualmie Rivers.

Native trees, grown at the Greenway tree nursery and planted in public parks and forests, improve air quality, provide shade for salmon in creeks, reduce erosion, filter pollutants and provide important wildlife habitat.

A Greenway restoration project includes several years of care for newly-planted trees to ensure their best chance of survival.
